1. How many course credits do I have to complete and by when?
- You will need to complete a total of 12 course credits within the first 6 semesters. The 12 credits are divided into 6 theory and 6 praxis courses. We would recommend one theory and one praxis course per semester.
- Of the required 6 theory course credits at least 2 of them must be in art history or art theory. The other 4 credits are electives. Praxis courses include: painting technique, printing courses, figure drawing, cooking seminars, sound studio workshops. After successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate to present to the registrar’s office.
2. When are the mid term exams and what do they consist of?
- You must complete a mid term exam sometime between the second and fourth semester of study. Exams take place at the end of the chosen semester.
- For your mid term exam you will present your work to a committee of professors.
- Mid term exams taken at the end of the second and third semester may be repeated if necessary. Exams taken at the end of the fourth semester cannot be repeated. The result of the exams determines whether a student will be accepted for further study at the Städelschule.
3. How do I change classes?
- Changing classes within the fine arts program requires the permission of both professors.
- Changing from the architecture class to a fine arts class or vice versa requires a separate exam and other application materials.

4. What is the registration deadline for each semester?
- At the beginning of each semester break the registrar’s office will send an email with information about registration deadlines and fees. This information will also be posted on the bulletin board in the main building of the school. Registration deadlines must be meet to avoid late fees.
- The course schedule contains the individual lectures, courses and seminars, as well as registration information such as deadlines and requirements for each one.
6. How do I change my status from guest student to full-time student?
- If you wish to matriculate in the school after your third semester as a guest student, you have to enjoy the required application process. You must submit your portfolio by the deadline and take and pass the admission exam in July.
7. How can I request an extension of my studies?
- In exceptional situations a class professor may approve a student’s application for an extension of a maximum of two semesters. A committee makes the final decision regarding the extension.
