The Städelschule is tuition-free (accident insurance € 1,50 plus € 170,00 for obligatory public transport per semester).
Summer term is from 1st April to 30th September. Winter term is from 1st October to 31st March. Lectures start approximately two weeks later.
The following courses have been declared compulsory by the council of the Städelschule: Art History, Art Theory, Philosophy and various technical courses.
Freshmen must enlist in one of the following classes:
The studies take place in direct dialogue with the professors. The main emphasis is on personal studio work.
Basic study:
The semesters prior to intermediate examination, which may be taken after the 2nd, 3rd or 4th term, must be completed in one class. For the intermediate examination students must present personal works. This exam is decisive for the student's further enrolment. It can be repeated just once, but not after the 4th term.
Main study:
After having passed the intermediate examination the main study commences and lasts until the 10th term. In exceptional cases and by request this may be extended by two terms.
Change of class:
A change of class is possible when the professors concerned agree to it. To switch from architecture to fine art is only possible after special examination and provided that all other requirements have been fulfilled.
Certificates and Confirmations for Fine Art:
For Students who have completed their study with the full number of semesters a certificate on the full-degree study will be issued. Students wishing to leave prematurely may, upon request, receive a confirmation on the number of terms they have attended. No diploma will be given at the end of studies. Students applying for the title ‘Meisterschüler’ / ‘Meisterschülerin’ after having completed their full number of studies need to have the support of their class teacher.
